-HR in the Thames Valley

Business continues to grow in the Thames Valley and Andy Montgomery, who runs Digby Morgan’s Reading office, looks at how HR has helped drive recovery.

After the challenging economic climate of the recent past, it has been pleasing to see that the recovery during 2010 has continued and that, despite many reports to the contrary, the positive upturn we saw in the first half of the year wasn’t just a ‘blip’ and has continued through Q3.

Although we continue to read much about possible double dips and there will undoubtedly be long term issues to be managed, we’re feeling positive and for many reasons. Although, of course, much of the discussion centres around the purely ‘economic’ issues, I recently read a fascinating report which focused on the resilience and innovation of the British workforce.

As business change is so often led by HR, it’s pleasing to see that companies have adapted to their environments. Some of the key points raised were:

  • Six out of 10 employees claim their employers have become more innovative and only 3% have slipped back into old ways of working
  • 32% of respondents in this report said that they are now feeling more engaged and feeling more personally responsible for the success of their organisations
  • Manager/employee communications have improved, increasing trust and engagement

During what had been a very difficult time for many people, it’s pleasing to read reports that actually show how companies have responded and adapted to the climate and that there have been some real positives from an employment perspective, rather than just economic results.

Maybe this proves Darwin’s quote right - ‘It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.’

After what has been a record breaking quarter for the Thames Valley team, it is pleasing to see that our approach to working with HR professionals has paid off. Over the next three months we hope to be expanding the team further and continue to build relationships with our clients based throughout the Thames Valley.
